Everything Except Boring
First off, this album reminds me of listening to Cudi... nothing about familiar sounds or vocals, and there's no hums, there's just a feeling. I just put on my headphones and instantly feel solitude. This album is a dope addition to anyone's "Lonely Stoner Playlist".
"Monotone & Boring" by Dougie Jones & The Sonny Jims as a whole I can only be described as a soundtrack to life. The project is personal, simply-existential, laidback, and very much punk with a dash of garage band. The melancholy nature of the tracks draw focus to vocal performance and lyrics where you notice the album sounds like a conversation with our deeper selves. The jewel of this album is definitely in the writing. The transparency Used in the lyrics reveal moments in ourselves and pulls back those layers. Vocal delivery is used like another instrument throughout the project setting a mood behind its sound of constant reassurance of growth still to come. The band gives a dope performance in this debut, but “boring” sounds tend to draw you into this feeling of being left adrift. That’s why Drifting was a perfect closing track that tied the album together nicely. Die was the intro that the project deserved and did a dope ass job of "setting the tone" (pun intended) for the rest of the album, BUT My top 5 in the tracklist is definitely - Is This Real, First Night, Begin Again, Frag, and Drifting. - That's still just about half the album. If you want to avoid the “monotone & boring” melancholy of the album as a whole, (you don’t) these would definitely be the songs to sink into first. I definitely recommend losing yourself in the album.
