THE REBIRTH OF THE COOL

The Rebirth of the Cool was an exploration into color theory as well as gestural and textural painting techniques. The inspiration came from music, Jazz specifically. Jazz is characteristically cool with its smooth sounds and improv nature. I was interested in capturing those aspects of Jazz and bringing them out within the works.

ERICK NKANA: LIVE IN THE LOOKING GLASS 2017

Live in the Looking Glass was a conceptual view of African- American culture and its appropriation from primitive to mainstream. The pieces simplified and exaggerated the human form like early cave paintings and other works found in African culture. Stylistically this type of rendering has been labeled “primitive” due to lacking certain technical aspects.
